The Ukrainian parliaments has declared last Sunday's presidential election invalid saying it had been fraudulent and ... with the will of the people. Members of parliament also passed a vote of no confidence in the electoral commission which declared that the Prime Minister VY had been elected as President. The decision has no legal value but supporters of the opposition leader VU hope it would send a strong signal to the supreme court which meets on Monday to decide whether to re-run the vote. This emergency session was highly charged. The proceedings inside parliaments howled/hallowed avidly on the streets by a crowd of thousands. They rows with approval as a speaker of the house told deputies accusations of mass fraud from both sides made it impossible to establish the true will of the people. A resolution declaring the vote invalid was passed by a large majority. The ruling has no legal authority but it's another major moral boost for the opposition and the ruling clearly deals a blow to the state sponsored candidate VY.
In the eastern city of D, supporters of VY took to the streets in great numbers. Our BBC correspondent said many who took part in the mass rally there were insisting they would never accept Mr. U as President saying they would rather form an independent Republic with close ties to Russia.
The Iraqi electoral commission has said there will be no change to the date of the national election planned for January. The announcement follows a statement by the interim government that its determine to the election for a new parliament will go ahead as planned. Some K and Sunni Muslim politicians have asked for a delay up to 6 months fearing many people won't be able to vote because of the continuing violence in Sunni areas. From Baghdad here is RG.
The electoral commission has been forced to respond to mounting speculation that a delay is becoming inevitable. In a statement it said the date of January the 30th is settled and they continues to work towards this. A spokesman for the interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi also said today that Mr. Allawi is not convinced by the arguments for a postponements. He said pushing the date back would not necessarily mean a broad participation in the election. And political parties representing the majority Shiite's population have added their voice to those pushing for the vote to go ahead on time. They say a delay would be illegal.
The Palestinian authorities says it will disband a small security unit which has been accused of human rights abuses. A senior security officials in Gaza said the 17 members of the department of protection and security will be reassigned to other units. The unit was formed more than 1 year ago in response to attacks by opposition factions against the Palestinian authority. Critics say some of the unit members turned into criminals confiscating land smuggling weapons and intimidating the public.
There has been a series of demonstrations in France demanding stronger legislation to protect women against violence. In the southern port of M, about 1000 people marched in silence in remembrance of 23 year old T woman who was stoned? to death in unexplained circumstances last month. In Paris thousands more took to the streets to express dissatisfaction over plans to deal with the problem outlined by the government.
South Africa has ended the current stage of a public consultation about place names. A body calls the National Geographic Names Council has drawn up a list of place names which had to be reviewed and possibly replaced next year. It says some are derogatory or confusing or reflect an era of colonial rule and discrimination. CR reports.
It's taken several years but south Africa's official body on place names now has a long list of sites which would be reviewed and possibly replaced next year. They include a water course known as KK, a derogatory term for a black African. And Johannesburg, it could be known as EG, the Zulu word for city of gold. South Africa has had an official body for naming Geographical sites since 1940. But years of wild rule and partite have given the country a legacy of place names which many find objectionable.
The New Zealand mountaineer and explorer EH has strongly criticized the activities of the United States and Britain in Antarctic. The veteran explorer said he was abhorred that the Americans were building a road across the continent.
