== RECENT CHANGES ==

Thanks to the feedback from the many people already using Free Chat
(both using it as a chat user, and using it as an administrator),
the following changes have been made to Free Chat and are visible in
the beta 2 release:

* Documentation and information now split into separate files,
* Source, objects and executables are now in different directories,
* CGI-included HTML files are in a different directory,
* International characters can now be supported,
* More descriptive error messages are displayed,
* E-mail address for the administrator is known (shows up on some errors),
* A path definition can be made for systems using "cgi-bin" or a "wrapper",
* In messages, "http;//" typos are recognized as meaning "http://",
* The "access.dat" file can be renamed so people can't read it,
* A "must be registered" mode has been implemented,
* THIS HAS BEEN CHANGED BACK DUE TO THE CGI CRASHING ON SOME SERVERS:
  XXXXX The "readline" library distributed with Free Chat now strips MSDOS
  end-of-line characters, so you no longer need to remember to FTP
  your ".dat" files in ASCII or TEXT mode, XXXXX
  YOU MUST REMEMBER TO UPLOAD YOUR ".dat" FILES IN ASCII OR TEXT MODE!
* The "install" script now runs "make" for you, reducing the installation
  process by one step,
* The "install" script no longer tries to set permissions on files within
  the "convert" directory, since, when you first install, there are none!,
* Registered usernames are protected from imposters using similar names
  (ie, "john-smith" trying to pretend to be the registered user
  "John-Smith"),
* Whispering is now an option - either completely on, completely off,
  registered users only, or sysops/gods only,
* You can specify the sizes of each of the control button GIFs, which
  means you can replace them (in the "buttons/" directory) with GIFs
  of a different size than the distribution buttons, which are 80x20 pixels,
* The "inchat" SSI executable is now stored in an "ssi/" directory,
* A copy of NBS's "random" SSI script is now distributed with Free Chat.
* The makefile lets you specify exactly where your "src/", "obj/",
  and "ssi/" directories and your CGI directory are.  (Good if you get
  a wierd "not found" error during "make".)
