<P>Using Sockets as Standard I/O Handles
<P>A special case of sharing sockets between processes is using sockets as standard input, output, or errors for a child process created with CreateProcess. This is useful for causing a process to unwittingly read input from a socket and to write output to a socket. Such a child process may &quot;know&quot; absolutely nothing about sockets or even networks; it just reads from its standard input and writes to its standard output.
<BR>There are two key steps in making this possible. First, a socket must be opened for &quot;synchronous&quot; access (that is, not overlapped) with the SO_OPENTYPE socket option described following. Second, the socket must be connected with either the connect or accept Windows Sockets function calls. After these steps, making a socket handle accessible as a standard I/O handle is just like doing so for other handles: Specify the handle value in the hStdInput, hStdOutput, and/or hStdError fields of the STARTUPINFO structure passed to CreateProcess Win32 function. The created process will read from and write to the socket without ever knowing it is a socket.
