<P>I'm assuming your trying to determine if the mouse is over the button, but you are not trying to click on the button.  I do something similar to this except I don't use subclassing or ownerdrawn.  I believe the button is already a child of the dialog window when you add the button to the window.  Here's what I do:
<BR>1) Add a message map for WM_MOUSEMOVE in class wizard for the dialog, this gives you the CPoint of the cursor, ie the current cursor position
<BR>2) Get the CRect coordinates for the button in question
<BR>3) Call PtInRect to see if the cursor is within the boundry of the button
<BR>4) If it is over the button do whatever you need
