<P>Generally speaking, you can't.  The text has been converted to pixels.
<P>About the best you can do is to determine what window is under the cursor, then examine its class.  If it's something with known behaviour like an edit-box or a list-box, you can ask it for the text.  Otherwise you can do a getwindowtext() and see what you get.
<P>Remember that custom controls, even subclassed standard controls, don't have to behave the way you think they might.  The text they actually display is determined strictly by the window's behaviour which can be just about anything for a custom control.  -steve
