<P>I have had a number of problems with inconsistencies between debug and release mode versions - the following are the steps I take to find problems:
<P>1. build without optimisations (as already said). 
<P>2. Build your application with debug info and single step through it - this will help you find exactly where the crash is - don't define the DEBUG macro - instead turn on debugging info in the Project Settings for Compiler AND Linker.  
<P>3. When your application crashes select 'retry to debug' and assuming you are running on the same machine you built the application on (so the pdb file can locate the source files) you should be able to look at where the problem is occuring (use the call stack to trace back from any MFC functions back to your own code).
<P>You will probably see the stupid error you made then.
<P>The most recent stupid error I found using this method is as follows:
<P>Having uninitialised variables which in the debug version contained zeros but the release version containing random values.
<P>This wasn't the first and I'm sure won't be the last.
<P>It is a common falacy that you can't put debug information into the release version - it doesn't cost much (all the debug info is in the pdb file) and can save you a lot of feeling around in the dark
