specified words and expressions in the body of the message.Within an area, messages are sorted by their creation date(rather than the date they were received by the board).Messages on the same topic are grouped into "threads" making iteasy to follow an exchange of messages. TSX-BBS keeps track ofthe last message read in each area so that users can easilyread new messages in forums with many messages. Readingmessages in one area does not affect the last-message-readpointer for other areas. The sysop can also create "anonymous forums". Messages postedon anonymous forums do not identify the sender but rather showa system generated name such as "Anon-8721457". Other userscan respond to anonymous messages using private e-mail and thereplies hide the identity of the person making the reply in thesame fashion. Thus users can exchange anonymous messages beforedeciding to reveal their actual names.A "privilege expression" (see "System Security") can beassociated with each area to control which users can access thearea. This makes it easy to set up adult discussion forums andto create private forums for groups that are using the board asa message exchange system. Forum access restrictions areespecially useful for Usenet which has a number of newsgroupswhich are not suitable for general distribution.A QWK facility is built into TSX-BBS to provide efficientdownloading of messages for off-line readers.A touch of a key invokes the TSX-BBS full-screen message editorto compose a new message or a reply. When writing a reply, theoriginal message is shown in a split screen window and originaltext can be quickly cut and pasted into the reply. There are "tosser" programs available to process incoming Fidoand Usenet messages. At the option of the sysop, new messageareas (categories) can be created automatically by the tosserwhen messages arrive for areas that did not previously exist. The sysop can block all automatic area creation or can enableit only for subcategories of selected areas.Fido and Usenet messages can be received via Satellitetransmission and posted to forums in real-time while the systemis running and users are browsing forums. Fido messages canalso be received by FrontDoor dial-up type arrangements. NNTP(Network News Transport Protocol) is supported for receivingand posting Usenet messages through direct Internet connections.Direct Internet AccessIn addition to Internet mail (SMTP) and Usenet newsgroups,TSX-BBS offers direct, interactive access to the Internet usingFTP and Telnet. The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program allowsyou to browse through files on other computers connected to theInternet. Once you have found a file of interest, FTPtransfers the file to a personal workspace directory on theTSX-BBS system. You can then use X/Y/Z-Modem to download thefile from the TSX-BBS work area to the local computer.A unique batch FTP facility is available in addition to direct,on-line FTP access. With the batch FTP facility, users browsethrough lists of files for FTP archives and tag those filesthat they want. They then submit a batch FTP request thatconnects to the selected site(s) and transfers the files to theuser's workspace. The user does not have to be connected to theBBS while the batch operation is taking place; they can log inlater and download the files. They can even submit requests torun at specified times. Browsing this way is much faster thandirect Internet connections because the index files are storedon the BBS computer. Users can also perform wildcard filesearches through the lists of files and tag entries that arefound by the search.Telnet is a terminal emulator program that you can use to logonto another computer connected to Internet. With Telnet youcan be an interactive user on computers around the world.FTP and Telnet run as "native" programs on the same computerthat is running TSX-BBS. There is no need to buy a separate, dedicated Internet server computer. You can provide your userswith full Internet access and do it all with a single computersystem.TSX-BBS allows Internet connections through both high-speedEthernet connections and dial-up SLIP connections. TSX-BBS canbe configured to dial an Internet provider automatically.Incoming Telnet and FTP AccessUsers around the world can also access your BBS through Telnet. They run Telnet on their remote computers and specify your BBSas the Internet host address. They can then log on and accessyour BBS just as dial-in users do.If you wish, you can set up file areas that are accessible viaFTP through the Internet. This allows users to downloadinformation and files that you wish to make available -- youbecome an Internet archive site. TSX includes a comprehensivefile access control system so you can designate whichdirectories and files are accessible to users. You canauthorize an "anonymous" FTP account with very restrictedaccess and authorize other accounts (with passwords) that havemore general access. You can also designate directories intowhich users can deposit incoming files via FTP.Incoming SLIP ConnectionsIf you have an Internet connection, you can resell Internetconnections to your users. Your users can call your BBS, logon, and then shift their connection from ASCII to SLIP (SerialLine Interconnect Protocol). They are then connected o theInternet through your BBS and they can run programs such asMosaic, Netscape, FTP, and Telnet on their local computers toaccess sites on the Internet. You can limit which users areauthorized for SLIP access and the BBS daily time limits applyto SLIP connections.World Wide WebThere are both server and client programs for TSX-BBS toprovide World Wide Web (WWW) services. You can design your own"home page" and allow others around the world to access yoursite to obtain information. Your BBS users can access WWWusing Mosaic or Netscape with direct SLIP connections. ASCIImode callers can use the TSX-BBS Lynx or line-mode WWW browsersthat run as a component of TSX-BBS.E-MailTSX-BBS has a full e-mail system that users can use to exchangeprivate messages. In addition to posting local messages to eachother, the TSX-BBS mail system supports Internet (SMTP) mailand Fido Netmail messages. Users can defined synonymous namesfor themselves. In this case a message arriving with anymatching syonymous name is delivered to the user. This isespecially useful for companies that wish to designate anindividual to receive messages addressed to "sales", "support","info", etc. Each user has a private "file folder" to store messages they wish tosave. Users also have private address books where they can storeaddresses. The address book can be used for e-mail (local, Internet, and Fido addresses) as well as Telnet and FTP Internet site addresses.On-line "Chat"A popular multi-line BBS feature is real-time conferencing,"Chat". Chat allows users to set up round-table conferenceswhere they can carry on multi-party discussions in real-time.TSX-BBS chat allows the sysop to create permanent discussiontopics; users can create temporary chat areas that are deletedautomatically when the last user leaves the area. The chatsystem features split screen mode which allows users to viewthe ongoing conversation while composing their owncontributions. Both public and private chat groups are support. An user canjoin a public group. Private groups are created when one userinvites other users into a private conference. Only invitedusers can join a private chat. The sysop can set up "action verbs" such as "hug", "kiss","kick", etc. that users can use to indicate actions or feelingstoward other users.System SecurityTSX-BBS allows the sysop to set many privilege and limit valuesfor each user. Controls such as daily time limit, downloadfile limit, and use of individual system functions such as thefile library, E- mail, chat, QWK, etc. may be set for eachindividual user. To simplify management, the sysop may alsodefine user "classes" which describe sets of limits andprivileges. A class can then be assigned to a user, changingeach of the users limits and privileges to those of the class. The TSX-BBS user privilege system is simple but extremelypowerful. Each user is assigned a "security level" that rangesfrom 0 to 65535. In addition, there are 80 sysop-definedprivilege flags that may be turned on or off. The meaning foreach privilege flag may be assigned by the sysop. The privilegeflags can be used in privi- lege expressions along with thesecurity level and other condi- tional tests such as the date, time, day of the week, etc. TSX-BBS privilege expressions caninclude multiple logical items with 'AND' and 'OR' logicaloperators and parentheses for grouping. For example, thefollowing privilege expression is true for a user who has asecurity level equal to or greater than 50 or has privilegeflag 1 enabled: "(PRIVLEV>=50||P1)". The following privilegeexpression is true only on Saturday: "(DAYOFWEEK==7)".In addition to the security level and privilege flags, thesysop can also assign a "group" number to users. This can beused to set up private file and message areas accessible onlyto members of the group. This is extremely useful forcommercial BBS operations that provide support areas forvarious companies or organizations.System ControlTSX-BBS comes with a "SYSOP" program that providescomprehensive control over your system. With the "dashboard"display you can monitor which lines are in use, what users areon-line, and what activities are taking place. The sysop canalso "spy" on user sessions. Real-time statistics displayedinclude the number of logons, new user authorizations, filesuploaded and downloaded, messages sent and received, doorprograms executed, and overall system loading. The sysop can examine and modify user authorization entries, change privileges and examine usage statistics while the systemis running. Statistics kept for each user include the date ofthe user's first and last logons, the total connect time, bytesup- loaded and downloaded, and information about the currentday's usage. Log files can be enabled to record even moredetail including the date and time of each file upload anddownload. The sysop can examine and edit file descriptions and monitorfile download counts. A cut-and-paste clipboard makes it easyto move files from one file area to another. All of this can bedone while the system is in full operation. The SYSOP program can be run from the console and from dial-inlines by properly authorized users.TSX-BBS Is a Complete SystemWhen you buy TSX-BBS you get a complete, integrated system.TSX- BBS includes a world-class multi-user, multi-taskingenvironment with built-in 32-bit memory management, preemptivetask scheduler, disk caching, DPMI, and background batch jobs. The basic system includes the file librarian, mail, forums, voting, QWK, and classi- fied ads, all without having to buythird-party add-ons.
