INSTALL.txt for cgi-util 2.1.2by Bill Kendrickbill@newbreedsoftware.comhttp://www.newbreedsoftware.com/cgi-util/June 15, 1999 - November 1, 2000COMPILING THE OBJECT-------------------- To compile the "cgi-util.o" object, simply type: makeCOMPILING AND RUNNING THE TEST CGIS----------------------------------- Compiling ---------- The test CGI programs, "test.cgi" and "filetest.cgi" can by compiled by issuing: make test-cgis cgi-bin directory ----------------- Depending on how your webserver is set up (check with your system administrator or look in your webserver's configuration files), you may or may not need (or want) to move the "test.cgi" executable binary into a "ScriptAlias" directory (usually called "cgi-bin" or "cgibin"). The test forms, "test.html" and "filetest.html" ----------------------------------------------- Edit the "test.html" and "filetest.html" HTML files so that the HTML forms' "action" values are set to the URL for "test.cgi" and "filetest.cgi", wherever that is on your webserver. For example: <form action="URL-TO/test.cgi" method="get"> Where "URL-TO/test.cgi" is the URL address where "test.cgi" can be found. Opening the form HTML file -------------------------- Open the "test.html" or "filetest.html" file in a web browser. You should see an HTML page with a simple form. Setting permissions on the HTML file ------------------------------------ If, instead, you get an "Error 403: Permission Denied," then make sure that the permissions for the files are set properly. Typically, "read" access for "owner," "group" and "other" is what you need. Check with your system administrator for details. You can set these permissions (plus the ability for you, the "owner," to be able to write to the file) with the command: chmod 644 test.html filetest.html Now, try using your browser's "Reload" option to try opening the file again. If you have further difficulties, check with your system administrator. Fill the form out ----------------- Fill out the form and submit it (with the "Ok" submission button) and you should see the results from the CGI. Error 403? ---------- If, instead, you get an "Error 403: Permission Denied," then either the directory containing the "[file]test.cgi" file, or the "[file]test.cgi" file itself, have incorrect permissions. Check with your system administrator. Both directories and executables typically need to have "read" and "execute" access set for "owner," "group" and "other." This can be set, along with "write" permissions for yourself, the "owner," with the command: chmod 755 FILENAME Where "FILENAME" is either the path to the directory whose permissions are set incorrectly, or the path to the "test.cgi" or "filetest.cgi" executable binary itself. Error 404? ---------- If you got an error 404, then the URL address in the test HTML forms' "action" fields are incorrect. Once fixed, use your browser's "Back" option to go back to the form, and then "Reload" it so that the corrected URL is used when you submit this time. Error 500? ---------- If you got an error 500, then the CGI program crashed for some reason. Check to see if a "core" file exists in the directory where you placed "test.cgi" and "filetest.cgi" and try debugging it.INSTALLING---------- This section of the document explains how to install the "cgi-util" library onto your server in a place where everyone (or just you) can get to it, if you feel like it is something you'd like to do. This is entirely optional. Note: you'll need root privledges to install it in the standard global places. Global ------ Switch to a user with superuser privleges and simply type: make install The "cgi-util.h" header file will be placed inside your server's "/usr/local/include/" directory, and the "cgi-util.o" object file will be compiled (if it hasn't been already) and placed inside "/usr/local/lib/". A static library, "libcgi-util.a", and a shared library, "libcgi-util.so", will also be created and placed inside "/usr/local/lib/". Somewhere Else -------------- You can also set the installation paths by either editing the "LIBDIR=" and "INCDIR=" lines in "Makefile", or setting the values when you run "make install". Depending on where you set the paths, you may or may not need to have superuser privleges. make install LIBDIR=~/lib INCDIR=~/include Just the .o ----------- If, instead, you wish to only install the plain "cgi-util.o" object file and the "cgi-util.h" header file, type: make install-o Just the .a ----------- Or, if you want to install only the static "libcgi-util.a" library and the "cgi-util.h" header file, type: make install-a Just the .so ------------ Finally, if you want to install only the shared "libcgi-util.so" library and the "cgi-util.h" header, type: make install-soEnd of INSTALL.txt
