I love riding roller coasters and I've always been curious
about the engineering that goes into their design. Roller
coasters are based on the physics of motion and mass and
understanding how they work leads to a deeper understanding
of the general application of these disciplines. Amusement
Park Physics walks you through the science of roller coaster
design with easy to understand text, a glossary of terms and
a hands on demonstration where you can design your own coaster
and see why it did or didn't work. Similar sections cover
carousels, bumper cars and other common types of rides.

Explore Science is an interactive science lab targeted at
educators and should prove an invaluable classroom resource. The
page uses Macromedia's Shockwave technology to illustrate all
sorts of topics. Main areas include Mechanics, Life Science,
Optics and Astronomy. The site's only drawback is its reliance
on Shockwave but don't let that stop you. There's a link to the
Macromedia download page and Shockwave is a robust browser
addition that you'll get a lot of use out of.

How Stuff Works is one of those pages that restores my faith
in the Internet. It is a site that lives up to the high ideal of
the Web's creators by publishing useful information without the
usual profit motive. 'How Stuff Works' is a collection of articles
that explain the science, technology and engineering behind many
of the things you use every day. The pieces are in depth but
written in an easily accessible fashion. Each has useful
illustrations and selected links to related resources. The pages are
well designed and the author has paid attention to good HTML coding
and image size so they load quickly too. Topics cover everything from
how to write Web pages to how cell phones work.

I for one just can't get enough of the
high-resolution pictures taken with the
Hubble Space Telescope. This site is
NASA's official archive of publicly
released images. There are hundreds of
pictures organized in several dozen
categories that cover everything from our
neighboring planets to deep space
objects and distant galaxies. Each image
is presented in several formats in both
high and low (thumbnail) resolutions
along with extensive scientific data and
explanations of the views.

The International Space Station
is being funded, built and manned by a consortium of space agencies
from around the world and will represent tangible evidence of NASA's
conviction that space is for everyone, not just the US. Astronauts
will be living and working on the station as it's built beginning in
mid 1999. The International Space Station Web site covers all aspects
of the project including details on the construction phase, bios of the
first three crewmen and an outline of anticipated activities planned
for the US component of the station. Make sure and check out the
gallery for a number of beautiful images and video (mostly artist's
conceptions) of the station and even a Windows desktop theme.
