Ishmail Resources

Ishmail Resources

This section describesIshmail resources. It contains resourcedefinitions and a sample file.
In addition to the resources common toX andMotif, there are anumber of resources that you can add or change to customizespecific features ofIshmail.
The application looks for these resources in the$HOME/.ishmailrcfile and the$HOME/app-defaults/Ishmail file.
The$HOME/.ishmailrc file is created when you startIshmail. Atfirst, it is empty. When you specify any preference in anIshmailOptions menu, the modified resource is written to this file.
In general, resources that govern color, type fonts, and windowwidget labels within theIshmail application should be added toyourapp-defaults/Ishmail file.

CAUTION:
Changes you make to the.ishmailrc file may beoverwritten the next time you changesomething using theIshmailOptions menu.

TIP:
Resources should start with the prefix<KBD>Ishmail*</KBD>, to ensure that they apply only totheIshmail program (and don't have adverseside effects on other programs), and also toprevent resources defined for other programsfrom inadvertently affectingIshmail.

Default resources are found in thelib subdirectory of where theIshmail package was installed. For example, if you use thepkgadd command to install theSPARC64/OS, the resources willbe in/opt/ishmail/1.1/lib/Ishmail. If you create a$HOME/app-defaults/Ishmail file it is not necessary (nor desirable)to first copy everything from the default file. The resources youdefine supplement or override those in the default file.
If you want resource changes to apply to everyone who is usingIshmail, make the changes to the default file.
Default resources are separated into several files, grouped byfunction. TheIshmail file contains<KBD>#include</KBD> statements, whichcause the separate files to be read as if they were all part of asingle, large file. These resource files are:

Ishmail.lang
Contains all the menu and button labels, and variouspop-up messages, that are used in the program. Also, contains definitions for shortcut key sequences. If youwanted to create a non-English language version ofIshmail, this file and theIshmail.help file are what youwould need to change.

Ishmail.colors
Contains the color specifications for windows and menus. There is a related file,Ishmail.colors-mono, intended foruse if you have a monochrome monitor. There are twoways to use the monochrome version of this. You canchange theIshmail file to includeIshmail.colors-mono, thatwill affect everyone, or put this resource in your$HOME/.ishmailrc or$HOME/app-defaults/Ishmail file:

Ishmail*customization:	-mono

TIP:
Some graphical desktops, for exampleHPVUE or theCDEDesktop, attempt to controlthe colors for all programs. Resources in thisfile can cause conflicts that result in oddlooking color schemes, or worse, unreadablecolor combinations such as white text on awhite background. To fix this, comment out(put an exclamation point character,<KBD>!</KBD>, at thebeginning of the line) theIshmail.colors line.

Ishmail.fonts
Contains font definitions for labels, buttons, lists, andtext. There is an alternative file,Ishmail.fonts.ow, intendedfor use on systems using Sun'sOpen Windowsenvironment.

Ishmail.help
Contains all thequick help messages as well as pointersto theon-line help cards, which are defined inIshmail.hlp.

Ishmail.hlp
Contains the on-line help cards.

TIP:
The help cards are read into memory whenIshmail is started. If you are concerned aboutexcessive memory use by the program, andyou don't mind loosing the use of the helpcards, comment out the following line, foundin theIshmail.help file:

ishmail.helpcardDbFiles: Ishmail.hlp

WARNING:
The help card file contains a table at the endwhich defines offsets into the file where helpcards are located. This table greatly speedsaccess to the help cards. However, this makesit very difficult to change the wording of thehelp cards, such as translating them toanother language. If you change the length ofa help card you will invalidate the offsets inthe table, resulting in scrambled help cardswhen they are used.

Ishmail.misc
Contains everything not in the other files, such as:

Name of the external editor command

Name of the spelling checker command

Name of the web browser command

Name of the command used to send mail

Window geometries

3D visual attributes

Icon definitions

Margins and spacing control

etc.

Other default resource files, not directly related toX orMotif, are:

mailcap
Defines the methods used for composing, viewing, andprinting various MIME data types. The following sectiondescribes this file in more detail.
Edit this file to make changes that will affect allIshmailusers. Or, you can add entries to your$HOME/.mailcap fileto specify your own utilities for viewing and printingIshmail messages that contain MIME content.

mime.types
Defines the default MIME data type for various file namesuffixes.
