Click inside the messagecompose field to enter the text of your message.<P>If you have text-wrapping<B>ON</B> (see<A HREF="XBFI2.BsKL9X3cS.html">Composition WindowPreferences</A>), the text you enter into the compose fieldautomaticallyword-warps to a new line when it reaches the rightmargin. When the text reaches the bottom margin of the composefield, the window area automatically scrolls vertically. If youresize the window vertically or horizontally, the messagecompose field resizes itself proportionally.<H2><A NAME="QCLdWQBJqM9X3cS">Ishmail Text Editor</H2><P>The<CITE>Ishmail</CITE>text editor uses enhanced<CITE>Motif</CITE> text editing functionsin all text fields, including the message compose field. The editoroperates in insert mode. That is, new text is always inserted tothe left of the cursor, expanding the text field and any existingtext to the right.<P>Here are the essential functions of<CITE>Ishmail's</CITE> text editor:<H3><A NAME="UCLdWQBJqM9X3cS">Entering Text</H3><UL><LI>Toentertext in a blank text field, click the pointer at thebeginning of the field to activate the cursor, then starttyping.<P>The field expands to the right as you enter text. If youhave text-wrapping set to<B>ON</B>, the text wraps as you reachthe right margin. However, you can use the<B>Return</B> keyat the end of each line to limit line width if you like.<P></LI><LI>To enter new text into an existing line of text, click thepointer at the desired location (or use the arrow keys toposition the cursor) and start typing. Text to the right ofthe cursor is pushed to the right as you type.<P></LI></UL><H3><A NAME="YCLdWQBJqM9X3cS">Scrolling Text</H3><P>Toscrollthrough existing text:<UL><LI>Press the<B>Up arrow</B> or<B>Down arrow</B> keys to scroll up ordown a line at a time.<P></LI><LI>Press<B>Control-Up arrow</B> or<B>Control-Down arrow</B> to scrollup or down a paragraph at a time.<P></LI><LI>Press<B>Left arrow</B> or<B>Right arrow</B> to scroll left or right acharacter at a time.<P></LI><LI>Press<B>Control-Right arrow</B> to scroll a single word andspace to the right.<P></LI><LI>Press<B>Control-Left arrow</B> to scroll a space and a word tothe left.<P></LI></UL><H3><A NAME="dCLdWQBJqM9X3cS">Deleting text</H3><P>The<B>Back Space</B> key and the<B>Delete</B> key perform similarfunctions:<UL><LI>Press the<B>Back Space</B> key to delete text to the left of thecursor a character at a time.<P></LI><LI>Press the<B>Delete</B> key to delete text to the right of thecursor a character at a time.<P><P><HR><B>NOTE:</B><BR>If you want the Delete key to behave like theBack Space key, you can specify this in the<A HREF="XBFI2.BsKL9X3cS.html">Composition Window Preferences</A> dialog.<HR></P></LI></UL><P>You can also select (highlight) text, then delete it, as describedbelow.<H3><A NAME="hCLdWQBJqM9X3cS">Selecting Text</H3><P>There are several ways toselecttext. Selected text is highlightedto indicate the range of the selection. You can perform a numberof different functions on selected text, including cut, copy, andpaste functions.<H4><A NAME="jCLdWQBJqM9X3cS">Selecting Text with theMouse</H4><UL><LI>Drag-select the character(s), word(s), or line(s) you wantto select.<P></LI><LI>Double-click a word to select it.<P>You can expand the selection horizontally a word at atime by holding the left mouse button down on the secondclick, then moving the mouse pointer in the directionthat you want the selection to expand.<P></LI><LI>Triple-click anywhere on a line to select a line. (A line isdefined as the text between the beginning of the line andthe next carriage return character.)<P>You can expand your selection by holding the left mousebutton down on the third click, then moving the mousepointer up or down to expand the selection a line at atime.<P></LI><LI>Quadruple-click to select all of the text in the field.<P></LI><LI>Click, then release, the left mouse button to place thecursor at the start of your selection. Then shift-click theleft mouse button at the end of your intended selection.<P></LI></UL><H4><A NAME="qCLdWQBJqM9X3cS">Selecting Text with theCursor Keys</H4><UL><LI>Shift-Right arrow or Shift-Left arrow to highlight text acharacter at a time to the right or left of the initial cursorposition.<P></LI><LI>Control-Shift-Right arrow or Control-Shift-Left arrow tohighlight a word (and space) at a time to the right or leftof the initial cursor position.<P></LI><LI>Shift-Up arrow or Shift-Down arrow to highlight text aline at a time above or below the initial cursor position.<P></LI><LI>Control-Shift-Up arrow or Control-Shift-Down arrow tohighlight a paragraph at a time above or below the initialcursor position.<P></LI></UL><H3><A NAME="vCLdWQBJqM9X3cS">Cutting, Copying, andPasting Selected Text</H3><P>Selected text is automatically copied to either a temporarymouse buffer storage area or a temporary keyboard bufferstorage area depending on the selection method you use.<UL><LI>To place text into the temporary mouse buffer area,simply select it using any of the mouse selection methodsdescribed above. The selected text is automaticallyplaced in the mouse buffer. The text remains in the bufferuntil you either delete it or perform another selectionfunction.<P>Once text has been selected, you can:<P><UL><LI>Paste the selected text to another location bypositioning the mouse pointer at the newlocation and clicking the middle mouse button.<P></LI><LI>Delete the selected text by pressing the Deletekey or the Back Space key. (This operationremoves the text from the temporary mousebuffer storage area.)<P></LI><LI>Type over the selected text. (This operation alsoremoves the text from the temporary mousebuffer storage area.)<P></LI></UL></LI><LI>To place selected text into the temporary keyboard bufferstorage area, you must explicitly press either the<B>Copy</B>key or the Cut key. Once the text is in the keyboardbuffer, it remains the buffer until you either copy or cuta different text selection into the buffer.<P></LI><LI>Once you have placed selected text into the keyboardbuffer storage, you can paste it to another location bypositioning the cursor at the desired location andpressing the Paste key.<P></LI></UL><P>For more information about editing text in the X Windowsenvironment, see the<A HREF="">X User's Guide</A>.<H2><A NAME="gDB1CfBrBM9X3cS">Using Drag-and-Drop</H2><P>Drag-and-drop differs from cut-and-paste in that you can use thedrag-and-drop method to copy whole objects. For example, youcan click on a message from the message list and, by pressingand holding the middle mouse button as you move the mouse,you can drag the selected message(s) into the Compositionwindow. When you drop the message(s), by releasing the middlemouse button, they are dropped into the text of the Compositionwindow at the spot where the mouse cursor is located. A messageyou put into the Composition window this way appears as anicon. The operation is similar to using the<B>F</B><U>o</U><B>rward (encapsulate) ...</B>option in the Main Window<U>M</U><B>essage</B> menu. You can click on theicon and a separate<B>Edit</B> window will be opened so you can modifythe included message.<P>You can also use the drag-and-drop function to moveattachments around inside the Composition window.<H2><A NAME="QAEI2.BsKL9X3cS">Adding Containers</H2><P>You can add containers to your message, which allow you todefine structure, or hierarchy, for your message. This is one ofthe most powerful features of a MIME message. The data in theattachments can be plain text or various kinds of multimediadata. The default command used is<CITE>ispell</CITE>.<P>For information about using the spelling checker, see<A HREF="3GEI2.BsKL9X3cS.html">SpellingChecker Option</A>.
