Sharing Folders with Other Mail Programs

Sharing Folders with Other Mail Programs

The mail folder files used byIshmail, in particular the
In-box
, alsoreferred to as the "system folder," can beshared with othersupported mail programs, such asmail, mailx, elm, pine,MMDF,andmh.
There are many different mail folder formats, but most UNIXmail tools use one of three different formats for the data in mailfolders. Programs such asmail, mailx, andelm store mail foldersas files, each file containing one or more mail messages. Thename of the file is the name of the folder. A line starting with thecharacters "From" is considered the start of a new message.
TheMMDF program also stores folders as a single file containingone or more messages. However, inMMDF-style folders a linecontaining four Ctrl-A characters at the beginning and end ofeach message is used to separate messages.
Themh program, and related tools such asxmh andexmh, use adirectory as a mail folder. Mail messages are saved as individualfiles in the directory. The folder name is the directory name, andthe names of the files in the directory are numbers correspondingto the mail message number.
Ishmail can work with any of these three mail folder types.
Ishmail's ability to share mail files with these other mailprograms gives you the flexibility of accessing your mail foldersvia a "dial-up" modem connection from any remote location. Inmost cases, such dial-up modem connections are throughcharacter-mode mail programs such aselm, mh, mail, andmailx.
If you intend to use acharacter-mode interface to access yourmail remotely through adial-up connection to the host system onwhich your mail resides, you should save your changes toIshmailbefore using the other mail interface. Otherwise you could loseunsaved changes.
You can make changes to your mail folders using another mailinterface program such asmail ormailx whileIshmail issimultaneously running on your host system. If you do, thepotential exists for some mail messages to get out of sync withthe internal copies kept byIshmail, possibly resulting in some"Read" messages reverting back to "New" status. Somepreviously deleted messages may also show up again inIshmail.
As a safeguard against data loss,Ishmail detects changes in thestatus of open mail folders. The next time you useIshmail, it willnotify you with a pop-up window that a folder has been changedby another program. When that happens,Ishmail always rereadsthe folder file to get the most up-to-date copy. As a result, anychanges you previously made while inIshmail but didn't save willbe lost.
Preceding Section: Customizing Ishmail
Following Section: Exiting Ishmail
Parent Section: Starting Ishmail
Contents of Ishmail User's Guide
