To see the<B>Fo</B><U>l</U><B>der</B> pull-down menu options, clickthe<B>Fo</B><U>l</U><B>der</B> button, or type<B>Meta-O</B>. The following menu appears:<P><H4>Figure: <A NAME="fgtyRKBWeXwA0YK">Folder Pull-down Menu</H4><IMG SRC="f9tRqFB0aG9X3cS.extobj.1.gif"><P>The<B>Fo</B><U>l</U><B>der</B> pull-down menu contains options for managing yourmail folders. From the<B>Fo</B><U>l</U><B>der</B> pull-down menu, you can make amail folder active, create new mail folders, open, close, and savechanges to mail folders, and select or deselect mail folders.<P>Message folders are files that contain one or more mail messages.The system folder, called the<B>In-Box</B>, is the default mailbox. It isopened and displayed when you launch<CITE>Ishmail</CITE>. Incoming mailmessages are stored in the<B>In-Box</B> until you delete them or movethem to a different folder. Each<CITE>Ishmail</CITE> user has a unique<B>In-Box</B>.<P><CITE>Ishmail</CITE> can work with three different types of folder formats,which together are the most commonly used among mailprograms. You should be able to use existing mail folders createdby most other mail programs. The supported folder formats are:<UL><LI>UNIX (<CITE>mailx</CITE>)<P></LI><LI><CITE>mh</CITE><P></LI><LI><CITE>MMDF</CITE><P></LI></UL><P>See<A HREF="6wXf7fBT.L9X3cS.html">Folder Preferences Option</A> for more information about folderformats.<P>You can create other folders and use them for organizingmessages. The folders can exist anywhere in the file system thatyou have read/write privileges, and you can assign to them anyname you wish within the limits of your operating system's filenaming conventions. The file system directory structure can beused to provide a hierarchy for collections of folders.<P><HR><B>NOTE:</B><BR>Security andaccess privileges for folders arethe same as those provided for files in theUNIX file system.<CITE>Ishmail</CITE> does not provide anyadditional access controls or security.<HR></P><H2><A NAME="LLY.bKBv3M9X3cS">Folder Menu Options</H2><P>To choose an option in the<B>Fo</B><U>l</U><B>der</B> pull-down menu, either click onthe option, type its associated mnemonic (the underscored letterin the option's name) or type its associated<B>Ctrl</B>-key sequence.Some<B>Fo</B><U>l</U><B>der</B> options have an additional cascading menu and/ordialog window.<B>Fo</B><U>l</U><B>der</B> options are:<DL><DT><U>N</U><B>ew ...</B><DD>Creates a new mail folder or a folder directory. Selectingthe<U>N</U><B>ew ...</B> option opens the<B>Create New Folder</B> window, inwhich you can enter the name of the new mail folder orfolder directory and select the folder type or directorytype. The<B>Create New Folder</B> window is a file selectionwindow that is used by other similar<CITE>Ishmail</CITE> menuoptions.<P><P><H4>Figure: <A NAME="m0f5NfB63M9X3cS">Create New Folder Window</H4><IMG SRC="f9tRqFB0aG9X3cS.extobj.2.gif"><UL><LI>The<B>Create New Folder</B> window has radio buttonswhich let you choose one of the three possibleformats for the folder. A UNIX-type folder is afile containing one or more mail messages. Usethisfolder type if you want the mail folder to beusable by other mail tools such as<CITE>mailx</CITE> or<CITE>elm</CITE>.<P></LI><LI>An<CITE>MMDF</CITE>-type folder is a file containing one ormore mail messages. Use this folder type if youwant the folder to be usable by other mail toolssuch as<CITE>MMDF</CITE>.<P></LI><LI>An<CITE>MH</CITE>-type folder is a directory containing files,each of which is a mail message. Use this foldertype if you want the mail folder to be usable byother mail tools such as<CITE>mh</CITE>,<CITE>xmh</CITE>, or<CITE>exmh</CITE>.<P></LI></UL>Next, enter the new folder name in the<B>New Folder Name</B>text field. You can also click the<B>Show list</B> button to see thedirectory listing.<P><P><HR><B>NOTE:</B><BR>See<A HREF="uO2ZgMB8BJ9X3cS.html">Using the File Selection Window</A> forinformation about how to use the file selectionwindow.<HR></P>You can also create a folder using either the<B>Sa</B><U>v</U><B>e</B> -> <B>To </B><U>f</U><B>older</B> option or the<B>Sa</B><U>v</U><B>e</B> -> <B>To f</B><U>i</U><B>le</B> option in the<U>M</U><B>essage</B> pull-down menu.<P><DT><U>O</U><B>pen </B>-><DD>This option launches the<A HREF="f9tRqFB0aG9X3cS.html#35iauyBGnK9X3cS">Select Folders Window</A>, inwhich you specify the names of one or more folders youwant to open. You can either type the names of thefolders or click the<B>Show List</B> option to select from the listof folders. (See<A HREF="uO2ZgMB8BJ9X3cS.html">Using the File Selection Window</A>.)<P>When you open multiple folders, an icon representingeach folder is added to the<B>Open Folders</B> area. The firstfolder in the group automatically becomes the activefolder.<P><P><HR><B>NOTE:</B><BR><CITE>Ishmail</CITE> supports three types offolders:<CITE>UNIX</CITE>-type,<CITE>MMDF</CITE>-type, and<CITE>mh</CITE>-type.<CITE>UNIX</CITE>-type and<CITE>MMDF</CITE>-type folders are fileswhich contain one or more mail messages.<CITE>mh</CITE>-type folders are directories which containone or more files, each of which is a single mailmessage. If you are using<CITE>mh</CITE>-type folders, youwill see their names in<I>both</I> the<B>Directories</B> listand the<B>Folders</B> list. You can open an<CITE>mh</CITE>-typefolder from either list, but it is preferable toopen from the<B>Folders</B> list.<HR></P><P><B>TIPS:</B><OL><LI>You can use a<KBD>+</KBD> (plus sign) or<KBD>=</KBD> (equal sign) atthe beginning of the name to refer to youfolder directory. For example:<KBD>=folder</KBD> is thesame as<KBD>$HOME/Mail/folder</KBD>.<P></LI><LI>If you type a relative path name, it is resolvedrelative to your home directory. For example:<KBD>dir/folder</KBD> is the same as<KBD>$HOME/dir/folder</KBD>.<P></LI><LI>You can use wildcard characters and shellenvironment variables in the names, whichare expanded by your login shell. Forexample:<KBD>$HOME/Mail/ishmail*</KBD> will openall folders with names beginning with<I>ishmail</I>in your<I>$HOME/Mail</I> directory.<P></LI><LI>You can refer to multiple folders by typing acarriage return between names.<P></LI><LI>If you are not using<CITE>mh</CITE>-style mail folders youmay find it confusing to see folder directoriesin the both the<B>Directories</B> list and in the<B>Folders</B>list of the<B>Select Folders</B> dialog. Conversely, ifyou are using<CITE>mh</CITE>-style folders you may find itconfusing to see non-directory files in the<B>Folders</B> list. You can control which types ofnames are shown in the<B>Folders</B> list by selectingoptions in the<B>Folder Preferences</B> dialog window.(See<A HREF="6wXf7fBT.L9X3cS.html">Folder Preferences Option</A> for moreinformation.)<P></LI></OL><P><H4>Figure: <A NAME="35iauyBGnK9X3cS">Select Folders Window</H4><IMG SRC="f9tRqFB0aG9X3cS.extobj.3.gif">The window also contains two radio buttons which offerthe choice to<B>Open and activate</B> or<B>Open only</B>. If you choose<B>Openonly</B>, icons representing the folders are added to the<B>OpenFolders</B> area but the corresponding folder files are notopened. If you choose<B>Open and activate</B> the correspondingfolder files are opened. The<B>Open only</B> option is provided toimprove performance if you are adding icons for manyfolders, or for large folders, to the<B>Open Folders</B> area. Youcan subsequently activate any folder which has beenopened.<P><DT><U></U><B>O</B><U>p</U><B>en (Recent)</B><DD>This option provides a quick way to access folder names.Slide the mouse cursor to the right to see a list of themost recently used folder names. See<A HREF="1j.-uyBk2I9X3cS.html">ApplicationPreferences Option</A> to change the number of names thatare kept in the list. The default is 10.<P><DT><U></U><B>Open (List)</B><DD>Slide the mouse cursor to the right to see a list of all thefolder names in your folder directory (typically<I>$HOME/Mail</I>). See<A HREF="1j.-uyBk2I9X3cS.html">Application Preferences Option</A> tospecify your folder directory.<P><P><HR><B>WARNING:</B><BR>If you have many folders in you folderdirectory, there will be a pause (up to severalseconds) as the list of names is built. This"quick access" option may not be very quick ifyou have a large number of folders.<HR></P><P><HR><B>TIP:</B><BR>You can<EM>tear off</EM> the folder name list byclicking the dotted line at the top of the menu.This leaves the list displayed even after youclick a name in the list.<HR></P><DT><U>A</U><B>ctivate </B>-><DD>Selectively activates folders which you opened using the<B>Open only</B> option in the<A HREF="f9tRqFB0aG9X3cS.html#35iauyBGnK9X3cS">Select Folders Window</A> dialog. The<B>Open only</B> option is provided to improve performance whenyou are opening many folders or large folder.<P>Selecting the<U>A</U><B>ctivate </B>-> option causes a cascading menuto be displayed from which you can choose one of twoselection options:<P><DL><DT><U>In-Box</U><DD>Makes the<B>In-Box</B> the active folder.<P><DT><U>S</U><B>elected</B><DD>Makes a selected inactive folder the activefolder.<P></DL><DT><U>S</U><B>ave </B>-><DD>Savesany changes you've made to one or more folders.<P>When you<B>Save changes</B>,<CITE>Ishmail</CITE> makes permanent anychanges you have made to the status of messages (forexample, reading a new message, so that its statuschanges from<CODE>New</CODE> to<CODE>Read</CODE>), and any alterations you havemade to the active folder (such as deleting or undeletingmessages).<P>Selecting the<U>S</U><B>ave </B>-> option causes a cascading menu tobe displayed from which you can choose one of threeselection options:<P><DL><DT><U>C</U><B>urrent folder</B><DD>Save changes to the folder currently displayedin the<B>Folder Contents</B> area.<P><DT><U>S</U><B>elected folders</B><DD>Save changes to folders you have selected(highlighted) in the<B>Open Folders</B> area.<P><DT><U>A</U><B>ll folders</B><DD>Save changes to all folders in the<B>Open Folders</B>area. Only those folders which have beenchanged are saved.<P></DL><DT><U>R</U><B>eread </B>-><DD>This option causes<CITE>Ishmail</CITE> to discard its internal cache ofinformation about the folder and re-read the folder file.<P><CITE>Ishmail</CITE> keeps a cache of information about folders inorder to improve performance when accessing a folder.However, this information can become out of date ifchanges to the folder are made by another mail program.Typically,<CITE>Ishmail</CITE> will detect that the information is outof date and rebuild the cache automatically. This optionassures you that the cached information is correct bytelling<CITE>Ishmail</CITE> to rebuild the cache explicitly.<P>Selecting the<U>R</U><B>eread </B>-> option causes a cascading menu tobe displayed from which you can choose one of threeselection options:<P><DL><DT><U>C</U><B>urrent folder</B><DD>Rebuild the cache for the folder currentlydisplayed in the<B>Folder Contents</B> area.<P><DT><U>S</U><B>elected folders</B><DD>Rebuild the cache for the folders you haveselected (highlighted) in the<B>Open Folders</B> area.<P><DT><U>A</U><B>ll</B><DD>Rebuilt the cache for all folders in the<B>OpenFolders</B> area.<P></DL><P><HR><B>NOTE:</B><BR><CITE>Ishmail</CITE> saves cached information aboutfolders in files, so that it can open the foldermore quickly the next time you start theprogram or open the folder. These files arekept in the same directory as thecorresponding folder. The name of the file isthe folder name with a<I>.</I> (period) prefix and a<I>-toc</I> suffix. For example: The folder<I>sample</I> willhave a cache file called .<I>sample-toc</I>. You candelete these files if you wish. The effect will bethat<CITE>Ishmail</CITE> must rebuild the cache the nexttime the folder is opened.<HR></P><DT><U>C</U><B>lose </B>-><DD>Closes one or more mail folders. Selecting the<U>C</U><B>lose </B>->option causes a cascading menu to be displayed fromwhich you can choose one of three selection options:<P><DL><DT><U>C</U><B>urrent folder</B><DD>Closes the currently active folder, causing itsicon to be removed from the<B>Open Folders</B> viewingarea. The<B>In-Box</B> then becomes the active folderand its contents are displayed in the<B>FolderContents</B> viewing area.<P>If any changes you have made to the currentfolder are outstanding, a confirmation dialogwindow asks if you wish to save the changesbefore closing the folder.<P><DT><U>S</U><B>elected</B><DD>Closes one or more selected folders, causingtheir icons to be removed from the<B>Open Folders</B>viewing area.
