In thesimplest case, these body parts are strung together sequentially. However, you can create body parts which, in turn, contain otherbody parts. These are referred to asContainer body parts. Thesection immediately below describes the four types of containersyou can select.
Working with Containers describes how to group messages incontainers.
Select theAdd Container -> option if you want to impose structureon a MIME message you are composing. There are no rules on what types ofbody parts may be put in this container form. This is a"generic" container.

MessageDigest
Select this option to create aMessage Digest container. This type of container is used to contain a group of one ormore complete MIME messages (also known as RFC822messages), for example a group of messages beingforwarded to another recipient.

Alternatives
Select this option to create anAlternatives container. This type of container holds groups of two or more bodyparts that contain equivalent information, usingdifferent formatting of access methods. This option isuseful if you aren't sure what level of MIME capabilitythe recipient(s) of your message have, if you aren't surewhether they have MIME capability at all, or if you justwish to give them a choice.
In an Alternatives container, each body part contains thesame information, accessed or formatted differently. Thefirst body part contains the simplest version, typicallyplain ASCII text. The last body part contains thepreferred version.
For example, if you send a message containing EnrichedText, a version of the text with the Enriched Textattributes stripped out should appear at the front of themessage. If you send a message containing GIFs, or othertypes of binary attachments, these cannot be convertedto ASCII. However, any explanatory text you type intothe message will be visible.
Another way an Alternatives container can be used is toprovide alternate access methods to a file. For example, when attaching a file to a message the most desirableway of doing so is as a Local file. However, this is onlyavailable to recipients on the same local network.Attaching a file using FTP access is a more universal, yetslower method of attachment. To cover both cases, youcould build an Alternatives container and put two fileattachments in it, each referring to the same file. Thefirst attachment would be FTP type and the second(preferred) would be Local file type.

NOTE:
This option gives you explicit control overcreating an Alternatives container. However, you will probably find it easier simply tocompose a message normally, then click theBoth if necessary button at the bottom of theComposition window. Theboth in this caserefers to a message with both plain textalternative and MIME parts.Ishmail willautomatically build the Alternativescontainer for you, and put a plain ASCII textversion of your message as the first body part.

Parallel
Select this option to create aParallel container. This typeof container holds groups of two or more body partswhich are considered related. The recipient of themessage should try to "show" the body parts together. For example, an MPEG video clip and an Audio clip couldbe put in a parallel container. The recipient's mail toolshould try to show the video clip while simultaneouslyplaying the audio clip.

NOTE:
While the idea of a Parallel container is good,in practice it is difficult to implement well. This is because programs external toIshmailare used to show various body parts. In theexample of a video clip and an audio clip, theMPEG viewer program usually takes severalseconds to start up, while the audio clip can beplayed immediately. So, even thoughIshmailcould launch both programs simultaneouslyyou will usually hear the audio clip longbefore you see the video.

Working with Containers

Containers provide structure for your MIME messages. You cangroup messages as a Message Digest by first creating a MessageDigest container then dragging the messages and dropping theminto the container. (SeeUsing Drag-and-Drop for a discussion ofcopying one or more messages into the Composition window.)
Containers appear in the Composition window as icons, with alabel indicating the container type. The icons flow in-line withthe message text, like included or attached files. Double-click ona container icon and a new Composition window is opened, showing its contents. You can create containers withincontainers.
Click on a container label and press and hold the right buttonand you get a pop-up menu which lets you do one of the following:

delete the container

set the container type

edit the contents of the container (same as double-clickaction)

For information about how container types should be used withMIME messages, seeAdd Container Option.
Preceding Section: Modifying or Deleting an Included File
Following Section: Check Addresses Now
Parent Section: Composition Message Menu
Contents of Ishmail User's Guide
