I am a shareware developer, and my port of my game to Windows is nearing
completion. A few questions:
1. What is a good patch-making utility for Windows? They're great
time-savers during beta-testing.
2. What is the standard format for the docs file for Windows? There is
a shareware app. on the Mac side called DocMaker that is like a word
processor, but creates stand-alone applications that display your text/
graphics file. Does Windows have a similar program?
3. I haven't had any luck finding a description of how to create an
installation program for my program. Is there a utility that creates
them? Is there a book that says how to do it?

I don't know.

Unbelievable. How can you now know about Windows .HLP files
(driven by the standard WinHelp help engine)? Surely you've been
using them all during your Windows development? Every application
has a .HLP file. You'll need the Microsoft Help Compiler (HC), which
you should have with your compiler. You should also have instructions
on how to create the required RTF file which is compiled by HC to
create the .HLP file. You can create RTF with Word for Windows or
use one of the help authoring tools that you will find discussed in
the comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.winhelp group (which is the place
to go for .HLP file help).

Don't bother trying to write your own. There must be 2 dozen
of them out there, ranging from shareware to commercial.
Perhaps someone can post a list of them. Anyway, just keep
reading here and you'll see lots of ads for them.

Most Windows shareware applications distributed their documentation in
the form of Windows "Help" files. There are many specialist tools available
for this or you can simply use any word processor which supports the
RTF format. There's a newsgroup "comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.winhelp"
devoted to the topic of writing Windows Help files.

I strongly suggest that you DON'T try to write an installation program
yourself. Writing a good one is not easy, and the installation process
is what gives a user that vital "first impression" of your product.
There are literally dozens of installation programs around - take a look
on "ftp.cica.indiana.edu" and search the index file for "setup" or "install".
