Yes,
ftp to microsoft.com
Yes, the qualification is worth having. With it you can go for jobs and
the employer knows that you already have a high level of knowledge.
I've changed jobs recently and being an MSCP was very instrumental in
my gaining employment.

I can't help you there, I'm a Borland man. But see my next
response...

I had a lot of trouble with this. I finally got it to work.
I had to tinker with the modem settings a lot, and then
REBOOT. It never told me to reboot, but some of the settings
(or "properties"- whatever the hell we're supposed to call
'em) don't take effect w/o a reboot. If you want to
tell me specifically what's wrong via e-mail, I'll try
to help you.
Good luck getting on to MSN, although I must say that it was
pretty stupid once I got there. It has a very AOL-ish feel
to it. I was on once, and have not been back since.

GENERAL GUIDELINES:
Please try to post to the appropriate newsgroup, and try to avoid
crossposting whenever possible. This makes it easier for everyone
to find the information they are looking for without wading through
irrelevant articles.
Second, please do not get involved in arguments about Windows vs.
OS/2 vs. Macintosh vs. NeXTSTEP *except* in the .advocacy group.
Don't post any comparison or argument, and if someone else posts one
-- don't post a followup! Ignore this flamebait, and help increase
the signal-to-noise ratio of the newsgroups.
SUBSCRIBING AND UNSUBSCRIBING:
To subscribe to a Usenet newsgroup, you can use the "gnewsgroupname"
command at the newsgroup level in rn, trn and strn. To unsubscribe,
hit "u" while in that newsgroup, if you are using rn, trn or strn.
To subscribe to a LISTSERV mailing list, send a mail message to the
LISTSERV at the mailing list address (ie LISTSERV@uicvm.bitnet for the
WINHLP-L@uicvm.bitnet list) containing just the text "SUBSCRIBE listname"
in the body. To unsubscribe, send mail to that same LISTSERV with the
body "UNSUBSCRIBE listname" or "SIGNOFF listname".
WINDOWS FAQS:
The Windows FAQs are available by anonymous ftp from ftp.metrics.com and
other sites; see the companion posting "How to get ..." posted simulta-
neously with this one for further details.
MICROSOFT FTP SITE:
Microsoft also maintains an ftp site (ftp.microsoft.com) with drivers,
patches and utilities on it for all of Microsoft's operating systems,
including Windows, Windows for Workgroups and Windows NT.
MORE INFORMATION:
If you have questions about these guidelines, you can email to Tom
Haapanen (maintainer of the FAQ, tomh@metrics.com) or Sean Graham
(moderator of the .announce group, sgraham@shiloh.nimh.nih.gov).

Subject: Shareware registration services (credit card processing, etc.)

Having some (moderate) success with NT shareware I recently wondered
what are the options for an author to arrage for processing of
credit card and other forms of payment. I learned of a few possiblilites,
would like to know more on the subject. Here is what I found out:
1. CompuServe has some shareware registration forum, where the user
can pay from his account, author account is credited. I'm not sure
what's the price for the service, my problem with it is that it's
limited to only CIS users.
2. An "online bank" called "First Virtual" (to learn more, email to
help@fv.com). Pretty involving too, both the seller and the buyer
must be members. The charge is 2% plus $0.29 per transaction plus the
usual credit card charges. They say in the fine print that they'll
hold the money for 60 days without paying any interest.
3. "Internet Shopper" in UK (http://www.net-shopper.co.uk/). They
display the software in WWW "store", charge the shareware author 20%
of the processed amounts. Not sure if credit card chages are included
in this 20%.
4. "Kagi Shareware" in Berkeley, CA. (http://198.207.242.3/ or
"finger shareware@kagi.com"). They charge 4.5% of the processed amount,
plus whatever is the credit card charge (e.g. 2.5% Visa/MC plus $0.47
per transation, no extra charge on check payments). They will also
display your WWW page if you ask for it and provide some other services,
like email forwarding.
Of the above I liked Kagi most. Until recently they processed only
Mac and Newton software, so I wrote for them the special REGISTER
program for Windows, that they require to keep the processing cost low.
If you know more about similar services, please post or email me, I'll
summarize to the net.
