These hosts include computers, both clients and servers, printers, scanners, and many other user devices. These devices provide users with connection to the network. The users can then share, create, and obtain information. The host devices can exist without a network. However, without the network the capabilities of the hosts are greatly limited. This purpose of a LAN was discussed in Chapter 1.</p><p>Host devices are not part of any one layer. They have physical connection to the network media by having a network interface card (NIC). The other OSI layers are performed in software outside the host. This means that they operate at all seven layers of the OSI model. This process allows the host to send e-mails, print reports, scan pictures, or access databases. The PC itself may be thought of as a tiny network. It connects the bus and expansion slots to the CPU, RAM, and ROM.</p><p>Symbols for the hosts are not standard in the networking community. They are, however, fairly obvious. They bear a resemblance to the real device to remind you of it.</p><p>Computers on a LAN perform a basic function. That is to provide the user with an almost limitless set of opportunities. Word processing, presentation, spreadsheet and database programs can be run. This is done with modern software, microelectronics, and a small amount of money. They also enable you to run a web browser. The browser gives you instant access to information via the World Wide Web. You can send e-mail, edit graphics, save information in databases, play games, and communicate with others around the world.
