Interior Gateway protocols (RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF) are used within an autonomous system (a network of routers under one administration, like a corporate network, a school district's network, or a government agency's network). The routers within the autonomous system speak to each other using IGPs.</p> <p>Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGP, BGP) are used to route packets between autonomous systems. Since the Internet is a complex combination of autonomous systems, EGPs are used by routers which form the Internet backbone.
