This may seem obvious, but once you consider what the signal is doing at a connector, interfacing with other networking devices active ports or passive jacks, its importance increases. A lot of design goes into the connector so that the signal insertion loss will be minimized and the impedance will match that of the NICs. Cables and connectors are said to be "tuned", that is, impedance matched. Secondly, terminations are a common point-of-failure for networks. Improper strain relief and poor crimping being typical culprits. Every point along the network , including the connectors, is important.
