Ethernet is an incredibly diverse family of technologies. First, try and have the students make sense of the naming conventions for Ethernet. This will be of some help, but not completely helpful. Amongst the diversity of Ethernet technologies, there are some that stand out in terms of legacy networks, existing installed technology, and the future evolution of LANs. In terms of legacy networks and the historical development of Ethernet, 10BASE2 and 10BASE5 Coaxial technologies are most important. In terms of current installed base, 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), and 100BASE-FX are the most important.
