I often write about how mini-programs and mobile payments in Chinese apps means they are literally built like operating systems. Let me just say this again, there’s no equivalent in American or Silicon Valley apps.

Today I’m going to talk again about how the offline-to-online (O2O) and on-demand apps convenience lead China has over American apps. Meituan-Dianping is a pretty decent example of this.

China’s Meituan-Dianping and Southeast Asia’s Grab have been rated as the planet’s two most innovative companies by Fast Company.

China is innovation transaction super apps (TSAs) far faster than the likes of Uber is evolving or Facebook is pivoting to a WeChat model of how its utilities are used in the real world. While Western apps are primarily digital advertising friendly, Chinese apps are much more practical and convenient for online-to-offline services.

Meituan has becoming what Uber could have been, and even Grab is pivoting into new ecosystem very quickly.

According to Fast Company, they may not be well known in the US, but Meituan and Grab are changing the lives of hundreds of millions of consumers and millions of merchants with highly complex operations disguised as simple transactions — elegant tech to enable real-world experiences. Asian apps are essentially more utilitarian and impacting economic growth in more tangible and less centralized way that companies like Facebook and Amazon.

In a world of mobile payments and super transactional apps with less friction, everybody wins especially the consumer, and not just Tencent, Alibaba, Meituan, Baidu and the other companies behind them. In the West super-apps haven’t become mainstream since the app ecosystem is more fragmented and services less consumers. If data is the new oil, China is the new Saudi Arabia and its apps are showing a level of consumer convenience you’d be hard pressed to find in North America or Europe.

That’s a scale that Alibaba can approach, but not Amazon, likely ever. Meituan of course also does personalized recommendations. Meituan-Dianping also tracks users’ consumption habits, such as price sensitivity, to recommend other things they’ll like. Again, there’s no equivalent in America or Europe with this kind of transactional value and real-world convenience.

It’s different world than this year, when the world’s most innovative company in 2019 is officially a Chinese super app. Meituan has found a niche-of-everything as an amalgamations of lifestyle services that connect hundreds of millions of customers to local businesses. China is able to create such platforms due to its incredible growth and the size of its consumer base that’s more than 3x as big as the United States.
从今年开始,世界变的不同了,2019年世界上最具创新力的公司是一家中国的超级应用。美团做为一个混合交易平台已经整合了所有细分领域生活方式服务,将数亿客户与当地企业联系起来。中国能够创造这样的平台,因为它的市场增速令人难以置信,其消费群体规模是美国的3倍。
