The telecommunications industry is undoubtedly in a period of radical change with the advent of mobile broadband radio access and the rapid convergence of Internet and mobile services. Some of these changes have been enabled by a fundamental shift in the underlying technologies; mobile networks are now increasingly based on a pure Internet Protocol (IP) network architecture. Since the first edition of this book was published in 2009, a multitude of connected devices from eBook readers to smartphones and even Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technologies have all started to benefit from mobile broadband. The sea change over the last few years is only the beginning of a wave of new services that will fundamentally change our economy, our society, and even our environment. This book is an entry-level text on the technology of telecommunications. It has been crafted with the newcomer in mind. The twenty-one chapters of text have been prepared for high-school graduates who understand algebra, logarithms, and the basic principles of electricity such as Ohm’s law. However, it is appreciated that many readers require support in these areas. Appendices A and B review the essentials of electricity and mathematics up through logarithms. This material was placed in the appendices so as not to distract from the main theme, the technology of telecommunication systems. This book is intended for RF planners, to serve as a practical tool in their daily work designing indoor radio distribution systems. Based on feedback from readers of the first edition it was clear to me that I needed to add more material and in depth description of the basics of indoor systems based on using repeaters; this has grown into a new Section 4.7. There was also a strong demand to add more detail and dedicate a full chapter to radio planning in tunnels, for both rail and road tunnels; and redundancy principles in the design focus for solving the challenge of handover zones. An entire Chapter 11 is now dedicated to tunnel radio planning.

We are in the era of ubiquitous computing in which the use and development of Radio Frequency Iden- tification (RFID) is becoming more widespread. RFID systems have three main components: readers, tags, and database. An RFID tag is composed of a small microchip, limited logical functionality, and an antenna. Most common tags are passive and harvest energy from a nearby RFID reader. This energy is used both to energize the chip and send the answer back to the reader request. The tag provides a unique identifier (or an anonymized version of that), which allows the unequivocal identification of the tag holder (i.e. person, animal, or items).
