In this article, we present an overview of methods for sequential simulation from posterior distributions. These methods are of particular interest in Bayesian filtering for discrete time dynamic models that are typically nonlinear and non-Gaussian. A general importance sampling framework is developed that unifies many of the methods which have been proposed over the last few decades in several different scientific disciplines. Novel extensions to the existing methods are also proposed.We showin particular how to incorporate local linearisation methods similar to those which have previously been employed in the deterministic filtering literature these lead to very effective importance distributions. Furthermore we describe a method which uses Rao-Blackwellisation in order to take advantage of the analytic structure present in some important classes of state-space models. In a final section we develop algorithms for prediction, smoothing and evaluation of the likelihood in dynamic models.

The software and hardware development fields evolved along separate paths through the end of the 20th century. We seem to have come full circle, however. The previously rigid hardware on which our programs run is softening in many ways. Embedded systems are largely responsible for this softening. These hidden computing systems drive the electronic products around us, including consumer products like digital cameras and personal digital assistants, office automation equipment like copy machines and printers, medical devices like heart monitors and ventilators, and automotive electronics like cruise controls and antilock brakes. Embedded systems force designers to work under incredibly tight time-tomarket, power consumption, size, performance, flexibility, and cost constraints. Many technologies introduced over the past two decades have sought to help satisfy these constraints. To understand these technologies, it is important to first distinguish the underlying embedded systems elements.

A major societal challenge for the decades to come will be the delivery of effective medical services while at the same time curbing the growing cost of healthcare. It is expected that new concepts-particularly electronically assisted healthcare will provide an answer. This will include new devices, new medical services as well as networking. Even higher accuracy and smaller form factor combined with reduced cost and increased convenience of use are enabled by incorporation of CMOS IC design in the realization of biomedical systems. The compact hearing aid devices and current pacemakers are good examples of how CMOS ICs bring about these new functionalities and services in the medical field. Apart from these existing applications, many researchers are trying to develop new bio-medical solutions such as Artificial Retina, Deep Brain Stimulation, and Wearable Healthcare Systems. These are possible by combining the recent advances of bio-medical technology with low power CMOS IC technology.

Among many books being published on this subject, a common feature is to treat a robot as a single system that is to be controlled by a variety of control algorithms depending on different scenarios and control objectives. However, when a robot becomes more complex and its degrees of freedom of motion increase substantially, the needed control computation can easily go beyond the scope a modern computer can handle within a pre-specified sampling period.
