This book is an introduction to Ada 95. It uses an example-driven approach which gradually develops small trivial programs into large case-study type programs. The main emphasis of this book is on maintenance problems, and using object-oriented technology to write maintainable, extensible programs. Program design is introduced throughout the book, with hypothetical maintenance Scenarios used to shoe design shortcomings. and revise them to accomodate maintenance needs. Practical issues such as debugging programs are tackled, and important Ada features not found in other languages are dealt with practically and early on in the text. These include exception handling, user-defined types, procedures, functions, packages and child packages.

This thesis is about wireless communication in shared radio spectrum. Its origin and motivation is ideally represented by the two quotations from above. In this thesis, the support of Quality-of-Service (QoS) in cognitive radio networks is analyzed. New approaches to distributed coordination of cognitive radios are developed in different spectrum sharing Scenarios. The Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) 802.11 proto- col of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) (IEEE, 2003) with its enhancement for QoS support (IEEE, 2005d) is taken as basis. The Medium Access Control (MAC) of 801.11(e) is modified to realize flexible and dynamic spectrum assignment within a liberalized regulation framework.

It is more than a decade since GSM was first commercially available. After some unexpected delay, it seems that finally UMTS is here to stay as a 3G system standardised by 3GPP, at least for another ten years. Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is witnessing a recent explosion of development in both industry and academia. A number of applications include supply chain management, electronic payments, RFID passports, environmental monitoring and control, office access control, intelligent labels, target detection and tracking, port management, food production control, animal identification, and so on. RFID is also an indispensable foundation to realize the pervasive computing paradigm—“Internet of things.” It is strongly believed that many more Scenarios will be identified when the principles of RFID are thoroughly understood, cheap components available, and when RFID security is guaranteed.

This introductory chapter is devoted to reviewing the fundamental ideas of control from a multivariable point of view. In some cases, the mathematics and operations on systems (modelling, pole placement, etc.), as previously treated in introductory courses and textbooks, convey to the readers an un- realistic image of systems engineering. The simplifying assumptions, simple examples and “perfect” model set-up usually used in these Scenarios present the control problem as a pure mathematical problem, sometimes losing the physical meaning of the involved concepts and operations. We try to empha- sise the engineering implication of some of these concepts and, before entering into a detailed treatment of the different topics, a general qualitative overview is provided in this chapter.
